Grandpa's car keys have been taken, but he still has the nuclear codes.
If you ever find yourself in the same room as the President of the USA, look for the military officer with “the football”. This sporting euphemism refers to the briefcase carried by one of the president's military aides, who must remain close to the commander-in-chief at all times. It doesn't contain a big red button, but it does contain the tools the president needs to launch a nuclear attack, communicate with the Pentagon and the situation room, and other highly classified assets.
In short, the entire US command and control system is based on a commander-in-chief who can be in command at any time, day or night.
President Joe Biden's unfortunate ailments, which just weeks ago were still being dismissed as right-wing conspiracy theories, have now been revealed to the world. Most Americans have seen for themselves that the president is too old and too frail to do the job.
Our enemies also know that the Commander-in-Chief of the United States is no longer behind the wheel if indeed he ever steered our ship of state. Events such as the disappearance of the secretary of defense days on end earlier this year they suddenly make more sense. Why sign up with a boss who clearly has?
Fortunately, the US chain of command remains intact: the US military has the discipline and resolve to withstand the absence of a leader who tires after 4pm, as has already happened. widely informed about Biden. But our enemies smell weakness at the top of the command structure. Will they act in the next five and a half months as a very lame duck ends his term?
This crisis of command comes as the US is going through a dangerous period. Only one week separated two major American events: the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and a surprise announcement on Sunday that Biden is no longer seeking the presidency. Both could have important implications for the country's future.
Trump's young assassin came within inches of changing the election and the country. It takes little to imagine what would have happened if Trump hadn't turned his head to look at an immigration chart. During another warm summer, 110 years ago, a thin young assassin, Gavrilo Princip, made his mark and unleashed the First World War.
Thank heavens Thomas Matthew Crooks lost But the attack on Trump still has important ramifications: Lawmakers on the left, right and center want answers.
The other important fact of this summer was the resignation of the campaign via X of a sitting president. Taken together, these eight days could have turned out very differently: America might not have had a favorite in this year's election, leaving infighting of the toughest kind. This is the kind of crisis that Neil Howe wrote about in his important 2023 book, “The Fourth Turning is Here.” Howe explains that these crises often lead to huge changes in the course of history.
And what would America's enemies have done in such a scenario? Here, too, history has a clue. By the 5th century, the Roman Empire was weak and struggling with political infighting, economic uncertainty, and an ineffective series of emperors. As the Roman government became distracted by corruption and power struggles, the Visigoths, led by King Alaric, sacked Rome in 410 AD.
According to this guide, the remaining five and a half months of Biden's presidency are likely the most dangerous in recent American history.
