President Joe Biden has appointed former Obama-era Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt, despite his public criticism against the office of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General amidst investigations into Burisma, the gas and oil company linked to Hunter Biden. Pyatt will now serve as Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources and will become the president’s leading official on energy security. Pyatt previously criticized the prosecutor general’s office in a 2015 speech at the Odesa Financial Forum, echoing Biden’s anti-Shokin attacks. Biden was accused of withholding U.S. government aid to pressure Ukraine’s leaders into firing Shokin, who was investigating potential corruption at Burisma. Hunter Biden received millions of dollars from Burisma despite lacking relevant industry experience. Pyatt’s nomination comes amidst continued conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and he will now lead the Bureau of Energy Resources within the U.S. Department of State, which leads the agency’s efforts in international energy security.
