The Biden administration said they didn’t plan to “lash out” at Iran after a series of three rocket attacks struck near US and Coalition troops in Iraq recently. But at around 6 p.m. EST on Thursday, Biden ordered air strikes against Iranian-backed militants in Syria. One member of the Iranian militia was killed in the air strike. The air strike hit trucks that were moving weapons to Iranian-backed groups in Boukamal, as well as structures used by the militants near the border.
The three previous rocket attacks near coalition troops were Feb. 22 on Baghdad’s Green Zone, one Feb. 21 on Balad Air Base and on on Feb. 15 on Irbil Air Base.
…At President Biden’s direction, U.S. military forces earlier this evening conducted airstrikes against infrastructure utilized by Iranian-backed militant groups in eastern Syria,” said Kirby. “These strikes were authorized in response to recent attacks against American and Coalition personnel in Iraq, and to ongoing threats to those personnel. Specifically, the strikes destroyed multiple facilities located at a border control point used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups.
“This proportionate military response was conducted together with diplomatic measures, including consultation with coalition partners,” Kirby said. “The operation sends an unambiguous message: President Biden will act to protect American coalition personnel. At the same time, we have acted in a deliberate manner to deescalate the overall situation in eastern Syria and Iraq.”
Did Biden come up with that action on his own? No, according to the Military Times, SecDef Austin made the recommendation.
“It was my recommendation. We’ve said a number of times, we will respond on our timeline. And, once again we wanted to be sure of the connectivity and that we had the right targets.”
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin
So we’re not lashing out, and we’re striking back on “our timeline.” Democrats are furious, and claim that it’s illegal to strike without it being a dire circumstance. ..sans Trump blowing up Qassam Soleimani last year. Congress wanted in on the information then, too.
The Biden administration is taking heat from fellow Democrats as lawmakers pressure the White House to provide a legal justification for an airstrike launched Thursday against Iran-backed militia groups in Syria.
The White House is pledging to provide a classified briefing early next week and argued the airstrike was consistent with Biden’s constitutional authority to defend the U.S. But the attack has given new ammunition to lawmakers who want to roll back broad presidential war powers authorized two decades ago.
Some of the Progressives in Congress are always demanding to be “consulted” before any actions are taken. Congressional leadership actually was “briefed” before this action.
The Pentagon did brief Congress the night before the airstrikes, according to Politico. Apparently they are taking offense to the difference between “briefing” and “asking permission.”
The Pentagon briefed congressional leadership on Thursday night ahead of the attack, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said, and administration officials on Friday continued briefing lawmakers and congressional staff…
…”We had a rigorous process to include legal review of the strikes conducted,” the NSC spokesperson said. “The strikes were necessary to address the threat and proportionate to the prior attacks.”
