President Joe Biden's campaign team has been battered in the two “sick weeks” since the CNN debate disaster, but is determined to press on despite an internal party coup aimed at ousting the geriatric leader.
The 81-year-old career politician is in a battle for his political life with Democratic lawmakers and his celebrity friends calling for him to end his re-election campaign and many calling for him to be replaced by his veep Kamala Harris as a running mate.
Biden's national television front-line as reported left demoralized campaign staff feeling “miserable,” and campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon tried to rally the troops in a phone call Thursday.
“We had two very, very, very hard weeks, very bad weeks. I told you I'd be the same with you, it's been a bad few weeks,” he told the team members.
In accordance with axes who obtained the audio of the “all staff” call, the third since last Wednesday, O'Malley Dillon told dejected staff members to disconnect from the “crazy world of gossip.”
“This two-week window has been really cool, and it's tough, there's no doubt about it. And it's tough for all of us because we're doing the work,” he said, referring to the efforts of a Democratic faction and the allies in the media to force Biden out before he costs the party the White House and control of Congress.
Seeking to boost staff morale, O'Malley Dillon added that Mike Donilon, the president's top political adviser, has been saying in post-debate meetings that “he's never seen a presidential candidate throw more than Joe Biden and do it.” do you know what joe biden does every day? He gets up and keeps fighting,” Axios reported.
While Biden adamantly refuses to step down, that hasn't stopped lawmakers in his party from urging him to hang it up, and this week Hollywood alumnus George Clooney penned an op-ed in The New York Times calling for the octogenarian to pave the way for younger blood, just weeks after he headlined an elegant fundraiser for the candidate.
“It's devastating to say, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the 'big f—ing deal' Joe Biden of 2010. He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020 . He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” Clooney wrote.
O'Malley Dillon acknowledged that there was some “slippage” for Biden in the post-debate polls, but assured staff there was nothing to worry about, “we definitely saw some slippage , but nothing significant, nothing massive, no bottom falling out,” he said.
“What you're seeing in the public polls over the last couple of days is what we're seeing in our polls. What we're seeing is that this is still a margin of error race,” he added as Biden and his supporters look to running out the clock until he is formally nominated, which will stifle the Democratic insurgency once he has been formally shut down.
“Everybody is miserable, and the top advisers are a total black hole,” said an anonymous White House official. he said Axios last week. “Even if you're trying to focus on work, nothing will come out or get any recognition.”
