During an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday, President Joe Biden expressed his opposition to Israel’s occupation of Gaza in the wake of Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel.
Biden also called for a “Palestinian state” when asked about eliminating Hamas.
The partial transcript is as follows:
PELLEY: Would you support the Israeli occupation of Gaza at this time?
BIDEN: I think that would be a big mistake. Look, what happened in Gaza, in my opinion, is Hamas and the extreme elements of Hamas do not represent the entire Palestinian people. And I think… It would be a mistake… for Israel to reoccupy… Gaza. We… but going in but taking out the extremists, Hezbollah is in the north, but Hamas is in the south. It is a necessary requirement.
PELLEY: Do you think Hamas should be eliminated completely?
BIDEN: Yes, I have. But there needs to be a Palestinian Authority. There must be a path to a Palestinian state.
PELLEY: That path, called the “two-state solution,” has been US policy for decades. It would create an independent nation alongside Israel for 5 million Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank of the Jordan River.
