In a recent interview, Joe Biden admitted this pressure from his fellow Democrats, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, played a large role in his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Biden revealed that concerns from fellow Democrats about his impact on their races influenced his exit.

“Some of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought it would hurt their races,” Biden said in his first interview since ending his campaign. He added that staying in the race would lead to constant questioning of Pelosi's comments and create a distraction. “And I was worried that if I stayed in the race, that would be the issue; you would interview me about why Nancy Pelosi said [something] … and I thought it would be a real distraction,” said CBS News Sunday Morning anchor Robert Costa.
Pressure for Biden to drop out intensified after a poor debate performance against Donald Trump in June. This performance caused a growing number of Democrats to call for his exit from the race. In the wake of his withdrawal, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor for the November election.

Pelosi, along with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Adam Schiff, were key figures advocating for Biden's exit from the race. Biden's cognitive problems were on full display during the debate, forcing Democrats who had previously downplayed concerns about his fitness to face reality.
After the debate, Biden's attempts to mitigate the damage only led to more gaffes, further fueling concerns that his presence could negatively affect other Democratic candidates. Biden acknowledged that his initial intention was to serve only as a “transitional president” and admitted that he might be too old for the role.
“When I first ran, I thought of myself as a transition president,” Biden said. He added, “I can't even say how old I am, it's hard to get it out of my mouth,” noting that things had moved too quickly for his plan to materialize.
