APStylebook removes “French” tweet.

The Associated Press Stylebook Twitter account has deleted a tweet that used the term “the French.”

The publication suggested that writers should avoid using “the” before words describing groups of people, discouraging phrases like “the French”.

“We recommend avoiding general and often dehumanizing labels such as poor, mentally ill, French, disabled, college-educated. Instead, use words like mentally ill. And use these descriptions only when they are clearly relevant,” he said the now deleted post.

But the Associated Press has said that including the phrase “the French” was inappropriate; ironically, while issuing the mea culpa, the AP still included the allegedly unacceptable sentence: “The use of ‘the French’ in this @AP tweet was inappropriate and has caused unintended offense. A updated tweet.”

“We have deleted an earlier tweet due to an inappropriate reference to the French. No offense intended,” the APStylebook account tweeted. “Writing French, French citizens, etc. is fine. But ‘the’ terms for any people can sound dehumanizing and imply a monolith rather than diverse individuals.”

The now-deleted post caught the attention of the French Embassy in the United States, which posted a screenshot in which he had written “Embassy of France in the US” in the name form of his profile edit box Twitter.

Wealthy business mogul Elon Musk wrote: “So why are you called ‘The’ Associated Press’?

“I agree, these days we should probably label ‘college educated people’ mentally ill,” tweeted Ben Shapiro.

“The AP has declared the word ‘offensive.’ I thought this was a @TheBabylonBee story for a second, and I run The Babylon Bee,” tweeted Kyle Mann, editor-in-chief of the satire website.
