This segment of his speech in particular raised eyebrows over his vocal delivery, which some listeners described as adopting a southern accent.

X (formerly Twitter) erupted in reactions shortly after his speech.

Despite the criticism, Ocasio-Cortez's performance at the DNC was well received by many in attendance, as evidenced by chants of “AOC” as she took the stage and meaningful applause throughout her presentation.

The congresswoman, originally from the Bronx, has previously faced similar accusations regarding her accent.

In a notable example from 2019, she was criticized for adopting a Southern accent while speaking at the Reverend Al Sharpton's National Action Network convention.

He defended himself against these accusations, stating on X (Twitter) “People who speak my voice can come right out. Any kid who grew up in a different language culture and had to learn to navigate the environment class at school/work knows what's going on. My Spanish is the same.”
