Anti-Semitism on College Campuses: Harvard and UPenn Under Fire

-

Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania have recently faced backlash for their handling of anti-Semitic incidents, particularly in response to recent Hamas attacks on Israel and Israel’s subsequent response. Harvard has come under intense scrutiny after numerous student organizations blamed Israel for the violence, leading a prominent law firm to withdraw job offers from students affiliated with those organizations.

This issue has caused such controversy that some politicians are questioning whether universities that do not adequately address anti-Semitic actions should lose their tax-exempt status.

A recent analysis by OpenTheBooks, shared with Fox News Digital, reveals that Harvard and UPenn have received billions in taxpayer-backed federal funds in recent years. From 2018 to 2022, Harvard received $3.13 billion in total federal payments, while UPenn received $4.38 billion. These payments include federal grants and contracts.

In addition, these universities have enjoyed significant tax breaks in their endowments. During the same period, Harvard’s endowment rose to $50.9 billion, and the university received $2.17 billion in special federal tax treatment. UPenn’s endowment stood at $20.7 billion, and the university received $1.28 billion in special federal tax treatment.

This begs the question: are these wealthy universities operating in the public interest or in their own special interest?

Harvard and UPenn have faced heavy criticism for their response to anti-Semitic incidents on campus. This has led some influential donors to cut ties with universities. Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan even withdrew his offer to participate in Harvard’s scholarship programs. The students also plan to sue Harvard, among other universities, for failing to adequately address the rise in anti-Semitic incidents on campus.

In response to the escalating controversy, Harvard President Claudine Gay and UPenn President Liz Magill have announced the creation of an advisory council and an “action plan,” respectively, to combat antisemitism on campus.

The rise in anti-Semitic incidents on campuses has led some lawmakers to question whether some universities should lose their tax-exempt status.

This is a complex problem with no easy solutions. However, one thing is certain: anti-Semitism has no place on our college campuses or anywhere else in our society. We must all come together to fight this hatred and intolerance and foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
