Former President Donald Trump could resume outdoor campaign rallies in the near future after a new line of Secret Service protection is considered.
“The U.S. Secret Service is making arrangements for former President Donald Trump to resume outdoor campaign rallies by surrounding his podium with bulletproof glass,” ABC News reported, citing multiple sources. “The measure is normally used exclusively for sitting presidents, but the Secret Service is making an exception after the first assassination attempt on a presidential candidate since George Wallace in 1972.”
Trump will speak behind bulletproof glass at future outdoor rallies.

The attack on Trump's life followed a catastrophic failure by the agency tasked with protecting the 2024 Republican nominee, which led to a 20-year-old shooter taking up residence on a rooftop approximately 130 meters from where Trump was speaking with a clear line of fire. .
Trump made it known during a July 31 rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that he would still pursue outdoor rallies because of the number of people who turned out to see him.
“They would prefer us to be in an arena. I don't know why. But we don't give up outdoor rallies,” he explained. “You know, all those people we had to turn away today, in a rally in the 'free air you can have”.
Shannon Watts, who teamed up with billionaire Michael Bloomberg in a campaign to strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights, and race-obsessed “sports reporter” Jemele Hill, who was apparently too radical for the left-of-center sports network ESPN. they were singing from the same hymn sheet when he responded to the story by attacking guns.
In the eyes of these virulent Trump haters, it's not about a deranged, unsafe shooter during the botched assassination attempt, but the gun itself.
But GUnz makes us safer!!! https://t.co/2NCTaNXGgE

And here I believed that “thoughts and prayers” were the ultimate protection against gun violence. https://t.co/gFxF6rt6Wj

A range of responses were seen online, with the feeling that the bulletproof glass would serve as a reminder that someone tried to kill Trump, while others worried about what they saw as “bad optics”.
Here's a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen in X:
This was not his choice, it is the Secret Service's choice because of its abject failure. Their serious failure matters to you that it is no longer talked about, and there are still no answers as to how they failed their primary task at Butler. Guns aren't the problem, criminals are…

Probably a good idea. The Secret Service is doing everything from truancy to sneaking into breastfeeding.
Well, everything, but literally cover the roof that is less than 200 meters from his face.

It actually helps remind people that there was an assassination attempt.
— Earth Emperor (@Empireenjoyer11) August 16, 2024
Well, remind everyone that they tried to kill him a month ago!
— James Dunn (@hypz) August 16, 2024
Or they just couldn't allow a clearly visible random guy with a sniper rifle to shoot him.

This is not an “abundance of caution”. This is the Secret Service explicitly admitting that they can't or won't do an adequate job of protecting you.

Terrible optics. It would be better to have no rally than to appear in a bulletproof box
