An analysis of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump detailed not only the number of shots fired, but also the number of weapons discharged.
“The last two shots were probably from law enforcement…”
The ongoing investigation into the security lapses that gave a 20-year-old would-be assassin the opportunity to shoot Trump and take the life of rally attendee Corey Comperatore has raised almost as many questions as it has answers.
That was the case after CBS News hired experts to analyze audio and video from July 13 that confirmed how many rounds had been fired in a matter of seconds, leaving the door open to doubt as to who fired two additional shots.
“Video and audio analysis of the shooting indicates that the gunman fired eight shots,” he detailed report from CBS News. “Audio experts Rob Maher of Montana State University and Steven Beck of Beck Audio Forensics told CBS News they identified 10 shots from the recordings of the event. The first eight rounds had similar acoustic characteristics and originated in same site.Beck said those eight rounds, fired in about 5.2 seconds, were consistent with the AR-15-style rifle the shooter used.
“The last two shots,” the report continued, “were likely from law enforcement and came from two different firearms at two different locations, audio analysis indicates. The first of these two shots were fired approximately 5.5 seconds after the gunman opened fire, Beck said. The gunman stopped firing immediately, indicating that a final shot was fired 10 seconds later.” .
Regarding the number of shots attributed to the gunman, the analysis was corroborated by witness from Col. Christopher L. Paris of the Pennsylvania State Police, who responded to a question from the House Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday: “I think the number is eight. Eight guts have been recovered.”
Meanwhile, as new video was released confirming security was aware of the threat before Trump took the stage in Butler, Pa., Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley (Dr.), who had obtained the images, raised additional concerns about how the US Secret Service had fortified the area.
“This attempted assassination is a matter of substantial public interest, and public business should be public,” the senator said in a statement. “I am releasing these records as part of my efforts to get answers and hold agencies accountable.”
In his letter to the USSS and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Grassley included a map designating which law enforcement agencies were responsible for which areas around the demonstration that showed the building of the 'AGR where the killer had been did not include. He also asked for clarity on whether the drones had been used by any of the agencies and, if so, in what capacity, while wondering about a water tower in the area.
“Was the water tower cleaned before the rally? Did the water tower play any role in the events of the Trump rally? asked the deputy.
