Arizona firefighters rushed to rescue a 20-month-old girl after she was locked inside a Tesla Model Y for about an hour and a half in high temperatures on July 24, 2021. Before her day at the zoo of Phoenix, grandmother Renee Sanchez had placed her granddaughter in the back of her Tesla Model Y before closing the door to find the car unresponsive to her phone or card key.
Renee Sanchez's Tesla Model Y had experienced a failure in its door opening mechanism. She had no way to get in, leaving her granddaughter unable to escape the rising heat inside the car. Sanchez said the first thing firefighters noticed when they arrived at the scene was the make of the car, confused about how to get into the Tesla.

Onlookers witnessed a frantic scene as Sanchez tried multiple solutions, from unsuccessfully fiddling with his car's key fob to unsuccessfully calling Tesla roadside assistance. It wasn't until local firefighters arrived at the scene – with “relief on their faces” – that Sánchez finally had hope that her granddaughter would be freed from the overheated vehicle.
“I don't care if you have to cut my car in half. Just get her out.”
Firefighters eventually used an ax to crash into the Tesla, securing a window with duct tape to prevent glass from endangering the girl before pulling her to safety.
