The perennially woke city of Portland may have a homeless crisis, a fentanyl crisis and a crime crisis to deal with, but if one of the city’s commissioners gets it right, one thing it won’t have is a gas powered leaf blower. crisis
The Oregon Office of Planning and Sustainability has been ordered to work with its colleagues in Multnomah County to begin developing “a path toward banning gas leaf blowers in Portland,” he said Portland Commissioner Carmen Rubio’s office. Fox 12 Friday.

“Staff will work collaboratively to draft the language of the city’s Chapter 8 Health Code that the Multnomah County Health Officer must enforce,” said Rubio’s chief of staff, Jillian Schoene , in a written statement.
As in San Francisco, Portland’s outdoor drug market and a movement to defund the police have decimated the city.

But Rubio and County President Jessica Vega Pederson spent the last year organizing a committee to discuss ditching the city’s weather-crushing landscaping tools in favor of electric or battery-powered leaf blowers.
“Resolutions requiring county and city offices and departments to switch to electric leaf blowers have already been passed,” Fox 12 reports.
“The next logical step is to introduce a citywide ban to address the health and environmental impacts of our residents and frontline workers,” Schoene wrote. “That’s why Commissioner Rubio directed the Office of Planning and Sustainability to work with Multnomah County Office of Sustainability staff to develop a path toward banning gas leaf blowers in Portland.” .
“Additionally, Commissioner Rubio has shared with staff that it is important that there is adequate outreach and engagement with our landscaping community,” Schoene continued. “Staff will work to achieve a schedule that provides adequate time to assist with the transition of our frontline workers. Also, the city and county are committed to ensuring that financial support is in place to incentivize this transition. The County of Multnomah has committed to providing funding, enforcement, outreach and rebates as we move toward this ban.”
Portland isn’t the first progressive city to wage a war on leaf blowers.
California “passed a measure banning new purchases of small off-road engines, including leaf blowers and lawn mowers starting in 2024.” BizPac Review reported December 2021.
More recently, Minnesota DemocratsState Reps. Jerry Newton and Heather Edelson pushed a pair of bills in February of this year that would ban lawn mowers, chainsaws and ice machines such as Zambonis.

AX, many feel that Portland’s priorities are more than a little wrong.
“Dealing with the real issues,” one user sarcastically noted.
“Yes, fentanyl is legal, no sewage flows into the Willamette…but of course, ban leaf blowers!” wrote another. “Portland is not a real city anymore. The government is an irresponsible travesty of Portlandia and dogmatically weak voters continue to vote/deeper into an irrevocable hole of leftist insanity.”
“Buying meth and fentanyl on the street? totally fine Camping out on the streets in a tent the city gave you? totally fine Shit on the sidewalk and steal for drug money? Totally cool,” noted a third. “GAS BLADE DRIVERS?!?? THIS ATROCITY MUST STOP.”
Take on the real problems.

Others pointed out that the ban could have consequences that clash with Portland’s virtuous signals.
“Wait until they realize this law will disproportionately affect minority (Latino/Hispanic) owned landscaping businesses who will have to purchase all new equipment to do their jobs… how does this fit in your ESG and DEI narrative?” asked a user X. “Garden prices are about to go up.”
