A new report highlights the fact that most adults don’t get enough sleep for a long list of reasons and this compromises their mental health.
Everything from pets, kids, money issues, disruptive couples and current events keep people up at night and according to Calm.Report to postpone”, it gets worse. Calm makes a sleep and meditation app to help send adults to dreamland.
“In 2023, the phrase ‘I’m tired’ reached its highest frequency in Google searches, suggesting that people are struggling with fatigue more than ever.” Fox News reported “Daylight saving time, which ends next week, could create even more sleep problems. (Clocks go back an hour on Nov. 5.)”
The report is inside response to summer time and the effect it has on the sleeping habits of individuals.

“We timed the release of Calm’s first Snooze Report to transition to summer, as we know it’s an adjustment that consistently affects people’s sleep schedules,” said Dr. Chris Mosunic, Clinical Director and Clinical Psychologist from Calm to San Francisco.
The survey, carried out by researchers, was quite extensive. 9,500 people aged 18 to 65 in 10 US cities and 10 UK cities were asked. Participants were asked about their sleep habits and what bothers them. Topics covered in the survey included “relationships, generational differences and significant stressors.”
The findings were disturbing. Approximately 91% of adults report that they are “not rested” or “feel tired” at least periodically.
“The Snooze Report helped us find out some of the main trends that define our relationship with sleep, including the deep connection between sleep and mental health,” said Mosunic.
The report shows that mental health and sleep are “inextricably linked”.
The pressure in life makes people always stressed and sleepless.

“A majority of respondents (78%) said lack of sleep negatively affects their mental health,” Fox News noted. “More than two in three adults cited seven hours as the amount of sleep needed for better mental health, but only one in three gets that amount.”
“Almost 75% of them are open to trying new strategies to sleep better. Almost half of respondents (42%) said they can’t sleep without some kind of help, such as medication, marijuana/cannabis, or alcohol” , the news outlet added.
Young people under 40 also have their own challenges with their eyes closed. According to the “Snooze Report,” Millennials and Gen Z don’t just have trouble falling asleep, they struggle to stay asleep. Forty-six percent of Gen Z have trouble disconnecting, while 25 percent of millennials have the same problem.
The report states that one in four young people cite caffeine as the reason they have trouble sleeping. Gen Z are 25% more likely to give up a “good morning routine” after not being able to sleep.
Thirty-eight percent of Gen Z participants noted that current events keep them up at night. Twenty-nine percent of millennials make a similar claim.
Feeling stressed, anxious or down? It could be related to sleep deprivation. Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep!

When it comes to technology, 26% more the Gen Z crowd give up sleep compared to millennials according to the survey.
“A survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that 93% of Gen Z have lost sleep because they stayed up ‘beyond their bedtime’ to watch or participate in social media,” noted Dr. Raj Dasgupta, chief medical advisor at Sleep Advisor in California, who was not involved in the study.
“It was eye-opening to see the differences between Gen Z and millennials, two groups that are close in age and often lumped together, but have different relationships with falling asleep,” Mosunic said.
The study also noted that people dream about things that are familiar to them. Thirty percent dream about what they did that day, as well as “romantic or intimate experiences.” Seventy-four percent of respondents know the people in their nightmares according to the report.
Approximately 10% of people dream of dying.
Then there’s the old standby of money worries that keep people up at night. According to the survey, it is the most common reason why people have trouble sleeping.

“Financial worries cause three times more sleep problems than worries about children or the state of the world, and twice as many as relationship worries, Calm report claims,” Fox News reported.
And if money doesn’t keep you up at night, your significant other or your pets could do the trick. Snoring or pets jumping into bed to sleep with their humans definitely disrupts sleep.
“Thirty-nine percent of adults say they sleep better alone than with a partner,” Fox News said, referring to the report. “More than half of them (56%) have made changes to their sleep routines to accommodate their partners.”
“Snoring, struggling and having ‘disruptive sleep habits’ are the top reasons couples sleep in separate rooms, with 46% of adults saying they have difficulty sleeping when they’re not in their own bed,” the news continued.

Calm has launched a sleep hotline for those who are struggling. The number is 1-844-4-CALM-SLEEP.
“The hotline was created to provide support and provide people with effective tools, such as our sleep stories and calming soundscapes, which have been proven to help achieve restful sleep,” explained Mosunic.
