An Alaska man was arrested this week on charges of threatening to kill a US senator. The suspect, Arther Graham, 46, of Kenai, sent a disturbing message to an unidentified U.S. senator on Sept. 28, promising to kill them and wear their skin as clothing.
According to U.S. Attorney S. Lane Tucker for the District of Alaska, Graham’s message revealed that he was facing eviction and had previously been homeless. He identified himself in the threat, even providing his name, phone number and address. The message was sent through the senator’s website, and the senator’s staff quickly reported the threat to the US Capitol Police, who launched an investigation.
On October 30, special agents from the US Capitol Police and the FBI visited Graham’s home. During his visit, Graham allegedly confessed to sending the threatening message, acknowledging that he was aware that such actions were illegal.
While the identity of the US senator who received the threat has not been released, the complaint referred to the senator as “she.” Sen. Lisa Murkowski is Alaska’s only female senator, but it’s still unclear whether the threatened senator was from Alaska or another state.
After his confession, Graham was arrested. He now faces charges of using interstate communications to kidnap and injure. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
The US Capitol Police is leading the investigation into the case, with support from the FBI’s Anchorage Field Office, the Kenai Police Department and Alaska State Troopers. Assistant District Attorney Karen Vandergaw of the District of Alaska is handling the prosecution.
Graham will make his first appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Nov. 3. This incident closely follows another case in which a different man was arrested for threatening to kill Sen. Jacky Rosen, a Democrat from Nevada.
