Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California won his state's jungle primary on Super Tuesday for the 2024 Senate election, while Republican candidate and former Major League Baseball player Steve Garvey won a spot in the second lap after finishing second, according to various reports.
Schiff, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2001, gained widespread attention in 2019 for his presiding of the House Intelligence Committee and leadership of the first impeachment proceedings against then-President Donald Trump, which tagged him “pencil neck” and “Shifty Schiff” among other invectives. Schiff, the favorite in the race for the Senate seat unoccupied of the late Dianne Feinstein, won the primaries with about 38 percent of the vote Tuesday night, while Garvey beat Democratic Rep. Katie Porter of California by comes in second — establish a general election contest between the two men.

Schiff and Garvey will run for two Senate elections: a special elections for the rest of Feinstein's term and general elections for a full six-year term in the Senate, ending in 2031. The winner of the special election will take office shortly after the Nov. 5 vote, giving them seniority over senators entering office in the 119th Congress.
The primary contest in California was one of the most expensive election races in the country, with Democratic candidates raising nearly 50 million dollars for their campaigns against each other. California, the bigger state in the country by population, has among the more expensive media markets in the country, making political advertising expensive.
