According to court documents, a witness related that after receiving the message, he walked away from the car in which he and the victim were sitting. Moments later, a single gunshot was heard, and the victim was seen clutching his chest before falling to the ground.
The witness, who had socialized with both the victim and Martinez during weekend meetings, speculated that an argument may have preceded the shooting.
Prosecutors revealed that Martinez had been deported to Mexico in September 2016 and was barred from re-entering the United States for 20 years. As a result, he was banned from owning a firearm.
The Tacoma Police Department continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with additional information to come forward.
Martinez pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday.
