A man plunges 400 feet to his death

In a tragic incident, a man plummeted 400 feet (122 m) from an overlook in the Grand Canyon, his body later recovered by park officials. The incident happened at Pipe Creek Vista in the Grand Canyon National Park around 10:30 a.m. this Wednesday. The man has been identified as Abel Joseph Mejia, a 20-year-old man from Hickory, North Carolina. His body was found about a quarter of a mile from the crash site.

Mejia was a student at Indiana Bible College, a school that recognized him for his warm smile and kind spirit. His absence, the school said, will be deeply felt by all who knew him. The incident is currently under investigation by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Coroner's Office.

Visitors to the Grand Canyon are constantly advised to keep a distance of at least six feet (1.8 m) from the edges of the rim for their safety. Despite these precautions, Grand Canyon National Park has seen its share of fatalities. Data from the National Park Service reveals that between 2014 and 2019, 14 people lost their lives inside the park. Across the entire US park network during the same period, there were 205 fatal falls. Last year, the highest death rate was recorded in Washington State's North Cascades National Park.
