The Minnesota Vikings have suffered a major setback with JJ McCarthy's rookie season now officially over. The 2024 first-round pick underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus, which has ruled him out for the entire 2024-25 NFL season, according to reports. TMZ.
McCarthy, who is just 21 years old, started experiencing knee pain after a narrow 24-23 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason. Initially, head coach Kevin O'Connell dismissed the discomfort as typical soreness. However, further examination revealed a meniscus tear that required urgent surgical repair, a worst-case scenario for the highly touted rookie.

Despite undergoing the procedure Wednesday in the Twin Cities, McCarthy took time to thank Vikings fans for their support. He had shown promising potential in his brief NFL debut, exceeding expectations by throwing for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in his preseason appearance. That performance had high hopes that he could see significant playing time, possibly even displacing veteran Sam Darnold.
I love you Viking nation. I will be back shortly. Fateful love

Now, the Vikings will have to wait until next season to see McCarthy back on the field. For now, the team must regroup and adapt to this unfortunate development.
