A Tarrant County sheriff's deputy was shot three times and hospitalized Wednesday, police said confronted an armed suspect in Fort Worth.

Jennifer Gabbert, chief of staff for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, said the officers were serving felony warrants when the shooting occurred. “The suspect shot one of our officers, he shot that officer three times,” Gabbert said.

Deputy Todd Tipton, 40, was listed in stable condition at John Peter Smith Hospital.

The alleged shooter, who was wanted on charges including sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child and unlawful restraint of a minor, died at the scene.

Fort Worth police described the situation as an active scene with an ongoing engagement with the armed individual.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents between Chesser Boyer Road and 28th Street near Haltom City around 1 p.m.

According to Tarrant County Judge Tim O'Hare, the deputy was serving a warrant in the 2900 block of Elinor Street when he was shot. O'Hare confirmed to X that the deputy's injuries were not life-threatening.

The Fort Worth Police Department's Major Case Unit is handling the investigation.
