An elderly American lawyer is reportedly being held in Panama after he allegedly shot and killed two environmentalists who were blocking the road.

The graphic video of 77-year-old Kenneth Darlintong trying to dodge the cut before opening fire on Iván Rodríguez and Abdiel Díaz has gone viral on social media.

Diaz died at the scene and Rodriguez was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, he said Newsweek.

The protesters were hit “with a pistol-type firearm, at the time when there was an argument with the protesters who were keeping the road closed,” police said.

For three weeks, Panama has seen nationwide protests “over a contract, with final approval on October 20, that allowed the local subsidiary of Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals to continue operating a copper mine in open sky in a biodiversity-rich jungle west of the capital for the next 20 years,” reports Newsweek. “There was also an option to extend for another 20 years, in exchange for annual income of $375 million to Panama.”

Businesses in Panama have suffered up to $80 million in daily losses due to roadblocks by protesters, Reuters reports Schools across the country have been closed for more than a week and more than 150,000 medical appointments have been missed.

In accordance with Lawyers.comDarlington is a civil law attorney in Panama and a partner at Mossack Darlington & Asociados.

AX, Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo sent his condolences to the families of the victims and declared that this shooting “has no place” in his country’s supportive society.

The Panamanian National Police gave few details about X, but provided a video of Darlintong’s arrest.

“The National Police arrests an elderly adult allegedly in connection with a recorded incident in Chame district where two people lost their lives,” the headline read.

On Nov. 1, in western Panama, another foreigner trying to cross a roadblock ran over and killed a protester, according to Newsweek.

“Officials have urged people to end the protests, although construction workers’ and teachers’ unions have vowed to continue taking to the streets until First Quantum’s contract is voided,” Reuters reports.

Online, many were shocked by the lack of sympathy for the slain protesters.

“This is a lesson to those who still block the freeway,” one user wrote on X.

“We need more people like him,” said another.

“Well, I’m not endorsing his actions, but this is a perfect representation of F around and figure it out,” commented a third. “They found out.”

“Absolutely disgusting the way people talk about the death of these people. I’m in total shock,” one user declared. “Yeah, they shouldn’t be blocking the roads. It’s very stupid of them, but they did NOT deserve to die. What about you guys.”
