Cape Town devastated by bad weather, displacing thousands of people

-

Cape Town, known as South Africa's tourist hub, has been hit hard by the harsh weather conditions, which have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and displaced thousands of residents from their makeshift homes. The city's Disaster Risk Management Center estimates that around 2,800 structures, mainly in informal settlements, have suffered serious damage, affecting around 8,460 people.

Sonica Lategan, a representative of the center, revealed that the city has been struggling with winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour for the past two days. In addition, Cape Town has experienced a deluge of rain of more than 201 millimeters during this period.

Due to the severity of the situation, it has been a challenge for the authorities to carry out an accurate damage assessment. Torrential rains and howling winds have not only caused physical destruction, but have also added to the woes of the city's most vulnerable residents.

The city's response teams are working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected, focusing on the hardest hit areas. The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, but it is clear that the city will require significant resources for recovery and reconstruction following this severe weather event.
