On Wednesday, June 12 in Dixon, Illinois, the mother of 32-year-old Jonathon Gounaris contacted the Ogle County Sheriff's Office about the violent behavior he was exhibiting. Within hours, his response to law enforcement's negotiation efforts would lead to a slew of charges that included four counts of attempted first-degree murder.

On Tuesday, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle released one of his deputies' body camera footage from the scene as part of a critical incident briefing where he broke down the timeline of events . In the video, as soon as the door to the residence was broken down, shots could be heard being fired from inside sending first responders running for cover.

According to VanVickle, Tactical Medic Tyler Carls of the Rochelle Fire Department had been hit twice with his body armor, Oregon Police Department Sgt. Tad Dominski had been shot in the upper arm and Lt. Jason Ketter of the Ogle County Sheriff's Office had a gunshot wound to the face.

The deputy who captured the scene could be seen running to the aid of Dominski, who he pulled out of harm's way before reacting to the call for medical attention to Ketter. It was then, after it became clear the suspect was incapacitated, that he joined in completing field triage of the casualty while a field bandage was applied to his face.

While Carls and Dominski were treated at a local hospital and released the same day, Ketter was evacuated to St. Anthony of Rockford where he underwent surgery and was released Friday.

The suspect, who had been shot in the stomach, also underwent surgery, as WIFR reported that he was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated battery 'one firearm, three aggravated battery and two charges. of possession without a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card.

According to VanVickle, prior to entering the residence, they had received a call from the suspect's mother and were “advised that her adult son was having suicidal and homicidal ideation. Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 9 :05 in the morning”.

After learning that the suspect's FOID, an identification required to legally possess a firearm in the state of Illinois, had been revoked “due to a third report of 'present danger,'” the Ogle County Emergency Response Team was called to the scene and arrived. around 10:20 a.m. Shortly before noon, after dozens of attempts to reach the suspect by phone, entry was authorized.

The suspect was said to be wearing ballistic armor and in the home, authorities found several handguns, a fixed-blade knife and pepper spray. VanVickle requested that the ongoing investigation be conducted by the Illinois State Police.
