A fatal crash on a Colorado highway last week led authorities to discover that the driver responsible for the crash is an illegal alien with a long history of being deported from the United States, officials said. Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, a 47-year-old man from Mexico, faces charges of reckless driving and manslaughter in the June 11 crash on the 285 Freeway near Conifer. Mendoza lost control of the semi-steep pipe, causing it to roll onto its side and spill into five other vehicles, killing one person and injuring another. In addition to this, hundreds of drivers were stuck on the closed road for more than twelve hours.

Mendoza was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he remains. Officials report that he was found to have a long history of being removed from the United States, dating back more than 20 years. ICE confirmed that Cruz-Mendoza first came to their attention in April 2002 when he was arrested in Oregon on local charges. An immigration judge ordered him removed from the U.S. back to Mexico on May 29, 2002. Since then, he has been removed from the country or voluntarily returned to Mexico 16 times, according to ICE officials.
ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), Denver, is now investigating Mendoza's case, after he filed a detainer to be notified of his potential release. While justice is served, Mendoza remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 30.
