Teenage son stabs mother's armed ex-boyfriend in self-defense

An alarming incident occurred in Odessa, Texas over the weekend when 38-year-old Michael Roy Guzman, Jr. was arrested after allegedly trying to shoot his ex-girlfriend. Guzman faces a number of serious charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful carrying of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of body armor for part of a felon and probation violation.

According to a report from the Odessa Police Department, the harrowing situation occurred June 2, when authorities responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 2700 block of Redwood Drive. The 911 call was made by a woman who reported an altercation with her ex-boyfriend, identified as Guzman. The confrontation occurred when Guzman arrived at her residence to collect her belongings, and quickly turned into a physical altercation.

The victim recounted a terrifying ordeal, alleging that Guzmán forcibly grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head into the steering wheel as she tried to drive away, leaving her partially dangling from the vehicle. After breaking free, the woman fled to her home and was confronted by her 18-year-old son, who intervened after witnessing the altercation. The son revealed to investigators that he witnessed Guzman chasing his mother and that a fight ensued, resulting in Guzman being stabbed in self-defense.

After the altercation, the victim and her son reported that Guzmán made a single round of the residence before leaving the scene. Surveillance footage and the discovery of a 9mm shell casing at the location supported his account, identifying Guzman as the aggressor in the confrontation.

After the incident, Guzmán's whereabouts were later determined when he presented himself at the Medical Center Hospital for treatment for his stabbing. Upon searching Guzman's vehicle, law enforcement discovered a handgun, body armor, and a substantial amount of 22 grams of cocaine.

Following his medical treatment, Guzman was arrested and taken into custody, where he remains in custody at the Ector County Law Enforcement Center as of Tuesday afternoon with a combined bond set at $105,000.
