Baton Rouge drug bust turns deadly, two deputies shot, suspect killed (VIDEO)

In a creepy incident Early Thursday morning in Louisiana, two East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies were injured and a suspect was fatally shot during the execution of a drug warrant. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. at a residence in the 5600 block of Robertson Avenue near Hollywood Street when DEA task force members and sheriff's deputies EBR executed a “knock and announce” search warrant.

One deputy, initially in serious condition, was rushed to a hospital but was later released Thursday afternoon. The second deputy, protected by a bulletproof vest, escaped injury. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Tyquarius Armstrong, died at the scene.

Law enforcement revealed that during the announcement of their entry, two people left the home and a confrontation ensued. The sheriff's office confirmed that when officers entered to clear the home, Armstrong fired at them, prompting the officers to return fire. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office (EBRSO) has released body camera footage that captures the intense moments of the shooting. Sheriff Sid J. Gautreaux expressed gratitude for the safety of the deputies, stating, “This incident shows how dangerous this job can be every day. I am thankful that our MPs are not more seriously injured. I was fortunate enough to spend time with our injured deputy and his family in the hospital, and I am happy to report that he is expected to make a full recovery. Fortunately, the second deputy was only shot in his bulletproof vest and was also checked and cleared. That's exactly why we make training a priority at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.”

For security reasons, the names of the injured deputies remain unknown. Mayor Sharon Weston Broome's office issued a heartfelt statement: “Today, we are saddened to learn that one of our sheriff's deputies was shot in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deputy and his family. We appreciate the quick response of our emergency services. This incident highlights the daily risks our law enforcement officers face, and we are committed to fully supporting them and ensuring their safety together throughout our parish, united in support of our law enforcement officers and our commitment to a safe East Baton Rouge parish.”
