Israeli airstrike kills Hamas officials and civilians in Rafah

In a recent Israeli airstrike on a Hamas compound in Rafah, a city in Gaza, two senior Hamas officials and scores of civilians were killed. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the attack, saying it targeted a compound where important Hamas terrorists operated. The IDF justified the strike against legitimate targets under international law.

The strike resulted in the removal of Yassin Rabia, the commander of Hamas' leadership in Judea and Samaria, and Khaled Nagar, a senior official in Hamas's Judea and Samaria wing. Both men were involved in numerous terrorist attacks in the early 2000s, which resulted in the deaths of Israeli civilians and soldiers. The IDF acknowledged the civilian casualties of the airstrike and subsequent fire, saying the incident is under review.

The airstrike came hours after Hamas launched a rocket barrage from Gaza, setting off air raid sirens as far away as Tel Aviv. The Israeli military reported that eight projectiles crossed into Israel from Rafah, with a number intercepted and the launcher destroyed.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in nearly 36,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel attributes the civilian deaths to Hamas due to its operations in dense residential areas.

The conflict was sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, in which Palestinian militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took around 250 hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Israel must take over Rafah to eliminate the remaining battalions of Hamas and achieve total victory over the terrorists.
