In St. Paul, Minnesota, A fatal police shooting has sparked an official investigation after three officers were involved in the death of a 41-year-old woman earlier this week. The incident happened around 7:15 p.m. Monday in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood, where police were called to a residence on Rose Avenue East for a suicide in progress.

Upon arrival, officers were confronted by the woman who, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), suddenly brandished a gun at them. The officers, identified as Chiking Chazonkhueze, Chee Lao and Yengkong Lor, responded by discharging their weapons, resulting in the woman's death at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

The aftermath of the shooting was captured on body camera footage that has since been released to the public. That footage is part of the evidence the BCA is now reviewing as it investigates officers' use of force, standard procedure when an officer-involved shooting occurs.

The officers involved have been placed on critical incident leave, which is common after such incidents. Chazonkhueze and Lor are experienced officers, while Lao had only three months of law enforcement experience at the time of the shooting.

In the moments leading up to the shooting, the woman's mother reportedly directed officers to the back room of the house where her daughter was sitting on the floor. According to the BCA, the situation escalated when the woman reached under a blanket, retrieved a gun and pointed it at the officers, prompting them to act in self-defense.

Despite his immediate efforts to provide life-saving care after the shooting, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. A pistol and cartridges were recovered, adding complexity to the case.

This incident has heightened tensions in the community and sparked discussions about police response strategies, particularly in handling situations involving people in mental health crisis. The ongoing investigation by the BCA will seek to clarify the circumstances of the shooting and determine the appropriateness of the officers' actions in this tragic event.
