DeSantis warns GOP hoped House vote on Biden impeachment inquiry could backfire

-

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is in favor of impeaching President Biden, but is warning Republicans that it could backfire if they ignore the border and the economy because those issues affect Americans the most.

“When I go around Iowa, Republican voters obviously don't like Joe Biden. Yes, they're worried about Hunter and all this money. But they're more worried about what's happening on our border. They're more worried about what's happening with the economy,” DeSantis told NBC's Kristen Welker a Meet the press on Sunday.

“And so if you're doing the research, which, again, I think is justifiable, you have to address all these other issues as well,” DeSantis said Sunday. “And I think there's a sense here that they're not focused on the key issues that they wanted to be addressed. Clearly, budget-wise, there's been no progress on that.”

“So make sure you don't ignore all these other issues. And don't use this inquiry as a kind of Trojan horse to not meet your responsibilities on all these other things,” he warned.

The House of Representatives led by Mike Johnson is preparing for a vote to open an impeachment inquiry against Biden next week. DeSantis believes that impeachment proceedings conducted before the 2024 presidential election could act as a trap that distracts Republicans from the issues that voters care deeply about.

DeSantis made that very clear that investigating and prosecuting the “corrupt” Biden family is “justifiable,” but warned that an investigation that goes nowhere could seriously affect the Republican Party in terms of political goals.

Republican strategist John Feehery agrees with DeSantis on the issue.

“The impeachment is a great distraction,” he said according to the Washington Examiner. “Most members are rolling their eyes because they know voters don't really care about Hunter Biden. They care about Bidenflation.”

“A lot of times impeachment proceedings don't benefit the party doing it, especially if they're Republicans,” Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) told reporters in an interview. “I think we probably have as many opinions as members, but my personal opinion is that the House is at a point where they would almost be remiss if they didn't start impeachment proceedings.”

“I don't know how to avoid it,” he said, noting that the investigation will almost certainly come before the 2024 election. “It's not always convenient when these things come out, but you also can't pick and choose when things come out “.

An unnamed GOP senator also told the Washington Examiner that concern about the impeachment inquiry “varies widely” in the Republican conference.

“Look, there are always Republican senators who are afraid of their own shadows. Fortunately, I hope, House Republicans will not listen to these voices of fear, but will stand up and do the right thing,” the senator remarked.

The Washington Examiner wrote: “Strictly speaking, the investigation is unlikely to lead to Biden's removal from office. Impeachment requires only a simple majority in the House, but impeachment requires two-thirds of the Senate, or 67 votes, a near-impossible hurdle in the ideologically-matched upper chamber, but the House is expected to vote to authorize its impeachment inquiry into Biden next week, according to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Johnson has strongly indicated this that an impeachment inquiry is coming.

“We have reached this turning point. The White House is shutting down,” Johnson said during his weekly press conference. “We will be at the height of our constitutional authority.”

He also commented that he believes “moderates in our conference understand that this is not a political decision,” however a “constitutional decision”.

DeSantis' opinion on the impeachment inquiry appears to be shaped by comments on the campaign trail in Iowa. He is listening to what the voters are telling him and trying to convey that to the Republicans.

“Whether it's a GOP Trojan horse or not, the Biden White House has become fully involved in the impeachment debate, releasing an 18-page memo to respond to Republicans,” the Washington Examiner wrote.

“Americans already overwhelmingly believe that House Republicans are prioritizing the wrong things,” White House spokesman Ian Sams said, adding that Republicans are focusing on debunked claims “rather than of focusing on problems they said they would prioritize when running for office, such as reducing inflation, growing the economy and strengthening national security.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) is confident he has the votes to move forward with the impeachment inquiry.
