After enduring nearly seven weeks of uncertainty over the fate of relatives kidnapped by Hamas, relatives of the hostages were left with hope and a new set of anxieties after Israel and the terror group Hamas reached an agreement on Tuesday innovative
The deal will see a four-day humanitarian pause to allow the release of at least 50 Israeli women and children.
One family told us they are facing a “terrible week” as they wait to hear if their loved ones will be among the freed hostages.
“My family, like all other families, will have a terrible week. We don’t know if my cousin will be among those released in this round,” said Maya Roman, the cousin of one of the female hostages.
The exact names of the hostages to be released have not yet been released by the government, but officials say those freed will be Israelis, some of whom hold dual nationalities.
Among the dual nationals is Abigail Edan, a 3-year-old Israeli-American who was orphaned when her parents were killed by Hamas.
Liz Hirsh Naftali, Edan’s great aunt, spoke of the “excruciating” wait to find out if her great-niece is coming home.
“For our family, we’ve spent the last seven weeks worrying, wondering, praying, waiting,” he said.
The family hopes Abigail will be one of the first to be released. Abigail is the youngest American hostage. He has a 6-year-old sister and a 10-year-old brother, who saw their parents killed by Hamas on Oct. 7, Naftali said. They hid in a closet for 14 hours, he said.
“The one thing we’re all holding on to is the hope that now that Abigail is coming home, she’s coming home on Friday,” he said. “Friday is her 4th birthday. We have to see Abigail come out and then we can believe it.”
About 1,200 people were killed in Israel by Hamas during the terrorist attack.
