Infowars host Owen Shroyer has been placed in solitary confinement as he begins a 60-day prison sentence for his role in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
Shroyer, who did not enter the Capitol building during the attack, they handed down the sentence in September to “amplify” the crowd with chants that encouraged rioting at a sensitive time. By then, crowds had gathered at the Capitol to protest donald trumpthe 2020 election defeat to the president Joe Biden.
Prosecutors argued that while Shroyer did not enter the Capitol, many who heard him did. They also pointed to a settlement Shroyer signed in 2019 after disrupting a congressional hearing. He agreed not to use “strong, threatening, or abusive language, or engage in any disorderly or disruptive conduct, anywhere in the United States Capitol.”
Conservative host Shroyer, who threw shade at his boss Alex Jones on Jan. 6, he faced misdemeanor charges related to the riot and pleaded guilty earlier this year to failure to comply with restricted pleas. However, he announced plans to appeal his sentence.
On October 25, it was announced to @OwenShroyer1776, an account attributed to Shroyer at X, previously Twitterthat the presenter had been temporarily placed in isolation at the Oakdale Federal Correctional Institution in Louisiana, in accordance with ongoing COVID-19 safety protocols.
In 2020, FCI Oakdale became the site of the first fatal coronavirus outbreak in the federal prison system.
“BREAKING: We have confirmed through a source at FCI Oakdale Prison that Owen is doing well and remains in good spirits.” read post X. “That said, he is unfortunately being held in isolation until Monday 10/30 per the facility’s (absurd/pathetic) COVID intake protocol.
The publication caught the attention of the deputy. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who wrote in response, “COVID IS OVER!!! This is absurd!”
In another post shared on the account @OwenShroyer1776, Shroyer was seen outside the federal prison before starting his sentence.
“Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re watching this video, I’m officially incarcerated,” he said before gesturing towards the prison. “I’m actually back there, right there, in federal prison. So if you’re watching this, I’m in prison.
“But I wanted to give one last final message. Now, first of all, I cannot express the gratitude and appreciation and gratitude of my heart for all the support in these five years of political persecution that I have been through.
“So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your continued support, and I promise that I will never give up telling the truth, I will never give up fighting for you.”
Sporting a black T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Speech Prisoner,” Shroyer said at the time that he planned to use his time behind bars to focus on self-improvement, while challenging his fans to do the same.
“I want to say this: I’m going to be there for 60 days,” he continued. “And in those 60 days I’m going to find a way to get better. I’m going to find a way to come out stronger, I’m going to come out wiser, I’m going to come out bolder, I’m going to come. So for 60 days while I’m there, I’m going to try to get better and become into a better person.
“And that’s why I’m giving you this challenge: During the 60 days I’m gone and the next time you see my face and hear my voice, I challenge you to be a better person. Use these 60 days while I’m gone to improve- me. If I can improve myself in there, I’m sure you can improve yourself here.
“My final message to you, my beloved audience. God bless, my God.”
Congresswoman Greene reacted to the video by calling Shroyer’s solitary confinement, which is protocol for incoming inmates, “inhumane.”
“Owen Shroyer is a prime example of political persecution in our country,” Greene wrote. “The fully communist Department of Justice has imprisoned a man and thrown him into inhumane solitary confinement simply for daring to speak words the regime has not approved.
“It’s an assault on the First Amendment and everything our founders fought and died for. A true disgrace to the United States of America.”
Shroyer’s sentence, which was half of the 120 days requested by the Justice Department, sparked fierce debate last month, with some arguing it was not long enough and others criticizing the sentence as a violation of free speech .
Norm Pattis, who represented Alex Jones in the Sandy Hook lawsuit, said Newsweek: “The court found Mr. Shroyer’s protected speech to be ‘relevant criminal conduct’ warranting imprisonment. That’s shocking.
“Mr. Shroyer did go in. He pleaded guilty to it. But to punish a journalist for his speech and ‘misinformation’ is shocking.” Pattis is also representing January 6 Defendant Edward Lang in his appeal to the Supreme Court.
