It’s been 27 years since I was 6 years old JonBenet Ramsey she was found murdered over the Christmas holidays at her home in Colorado, with most of the leads on who killed her having gone cold over time. Now, however, Boulder police suggest they may be making progress on that front. “There are several people on the radar,” says a police source messenger. “New persons of interest. And we’re seeing if any of them are the key to solving this case.” Cops say they’ve never stopped investigating, noting that in 2021 they analyzed nearly 1,000 DNA samples to try to track down JonBenet’s killer, and interviewed more than 1,000 people.
Earlier this year, Boulder police said they began using new DNA technology to take a look at evidence never before examined in the case. In the past, authorities have focused on at least two men: John Mark Karr, who confessed to the killing but was later released for lack of evidence, and Gary Oliva, a convicted pedophile who also claims he killed JonBenet (JonBenet’s half-brother, John Andrew). , he doesn’t think Oliva is the killer). “Of course the whole department knows these men,” says the police source. “And of course, if something comes up that brings them back, then that’s the route we’ll take. But now, there are new people to look at.”
In 2008, JonBenet’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, who had long been viewed with suspicion, were exonerated through DNA evidence. (Patsy Ramsey had died two years earlier of ovarian cancer.) Police also said JonBenet’s older brother Burke, who was 9 at the time of her murder, was not a suspect. “Time will tell if we get the answers we need,” the police source tells the Messenger. “This is a marathon, not a sprint.” Meanwhile, John Ramsey spoke to the Ground last month on what would have been JonBenet’s 33rd birthday, wondering if her daughter might still be alive if she hadn’t been involved in the world of beauty pageants.
“I thought these pageants were only attended by mums, dads and grandparents, so I wasn’t really worried about this exposure,” she said. “But later we found out that there were people attending these contests who didn’t need to be there: pedophiles… We were very naive.” As for what Ramsey would say to JonBenet today if he had the chance, he noted, “I would say, ‘I’m sorry I didn’t protect you.'” That’s a father’s job… We were just being accommodating, we thought that we live in the land of la-la without the need to worry. […] but we were wrong.” Read more from him here. (Read more JonBenet Ramsey stories.)
