You might be surprised to learn that nearly 40 percent of American women have tattoos.
“Nearly twice as many women are tattooed (39%) as men (21%). This is true for both rates of hidden tattoos (30.2% vs. 16.7%) and visible tattoos (8, 5% against 4.1%)”. https://t.co/lOpOA7niyp pic.twitter.com/3znnIC6IHY

Some commentators believe that this trend reveals a clear social class divide.
Some are surprised that 40% of women in the United States have tattoos. A big social class divide. Very few upper and upper middle class women have them. But almost every working-class woman under 40 I know has at least one tattoo. I would guess 70-80% of women not college graduates. https://t.co/OLhCLfZIxV

Tattoos are fairly uncommon among middle- and upper-class women, the theory goes. But when you look at the working class, especially women under 40, tattoos are a very common sight.
Here are some interesting ones statistics about tattoos in america:
- About 40% of the US workforce has tattoos.
- Almost all women are okay with their co-workers showing tattoos at work.
- Only 12% of people with tattoos have them visible in the workplace.
- Women are more likely to experience discrimination because of tattoos at work than men.
- About 40% of employees believe that tattoos are not appropriate in the workplace.
- Almost 90% of people accept ink on professional athletes and personal trainers.
- Direct discrimination against tattoos at work is low, with only 4% of people reporting it.
- Young employees are statistically more likely to have tattoos than the older generation.
Do you subscribe to the idea that the number of tattoos a woman has reflects emotional or mental turmoil? Is there more to this narrative, beyond simple art and personal expression? Some people have very strong feelings about this.

Rob Henderson, the author of the previous X posts, referenced this to study from Science Direct. It’s a fascinating exploration of women’s powerful inclination to use their bodies as a canvas.
