A 14-year-old boy killed at least nine people and wounded seven others in a shooting at a school in Serbia on Wednesday.

The boy, who has not been identified, attended Vladislav Ribnikar School in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. Police arrested the boy Wednesday morning, alleging he had taken his father’s gun to carry out the shooting.

Eight students and a security guard were confirmed dead in the attack, while six other students and a teacher were injured. Some of the injured remain in critical condition.

“Police immediately dispatched all available patrols to the scene and arrested a juvenile suspect – a seventh grade student who is suspected of firing multiple shots with his father’s gun in the direction of students and school security,” he said. write the Ministry of the Interior of Serbia in a statement.

Three of the injured students, two boys and a girl, were taken to area hospitals. Police say both boys were in stable condition despite suffering gunshot wounds. The girl, however, was shot in the head and was undergoing surgery, police told reporters.

The nature of the injuries of the other three injured students is still unclear. Doctors were fighting to save the life of the teacher who was injured on Wednesday morning. Witnesses say the student shot the teacher, a man, first before turning on the students, according to the BBC.

Serbia has very strict gun laws, yet has some of the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe. There are roughly 39 guns per 100 people in the country, according to the World Population Review.
