Despite preparations, the next generation of telecommunications technology is still years away from implementation
The US government is drawing up plans for the eventual use of 6G networks, hoping to give Washington a technological edge in the future amid concerns about Beijing’s rapid advances in the telecommunications sector.
The White House met with corporate leaders, technology officials and academic experts on Friday to develop strategies for upcoming 6G networks, senior US officials confirmed to multiple media outlets.
The administration aims to “take the lessons learned from 5G about the importance of early engagement and resilience” and use them to develop a 6G network that “optimizes performance, accessibility and security,” added a member of the government
“It’s imperative that we start looking at these issues soon,” a security official said on a press call Thursday night.

Although 6G technology is still in its infancy and is likely years away from being used by the general public, it is expected to be significantly faster than current 5G networks and dramatically expand access to high-speed Internet worldwide.
In late 2020, China successfully launched an experimental satellite carrying candidates for potential 6G technology, hoping to verify the performance of the 6G frequency band in space.
Another administration official pointed to China’s technological gains in recent years, specifically in the rollout of its own 5G network, saying Beijing had used the technology to advance national security goals and grow the its global market share in the telecommunications industry.
“China really prioritized its telecommunications sector … and I think we might not,” they said, pointing to Shenzhen-based Huawei as an example of Beijing’s success.
Washington has targeted Huawei with sanctions, claiming it poses a threat to US privacy and national security. On Wednesday, the Commerce Department slapped a US computer parts maker, Seagate, with a $300 million penalty for doing business with the Chinese company. The fine was the largest penalty imposed by the agency outside of a criminal case.
Beijing has denounced US efforts against Huawei as a way to sideline a capable foreign competitor in US markets, and has also accused Washington of seeking “technological hegemony” and violating “the principles of the economy of market”.
Huawei is gearing up for its own rollout of 6G technology and says it hopes to launch the ultra-fast networks sometime in 2030. The company published an extensive paper on the topic in 2021 titled “6G: The Next Horizon,” which affirmed which “expressed our preliminary view of 6G”.
