Two years after Big Tech colluded to deplatform former US President Donald J. Trump, one of the biggest social media platforms has finally decided to reinstate his account.
Axios reported in a “first” that Donald Trump’s YouTube account has been restored.
“YouTube will lift its restrictions on former President Trump’s channel on Friday,” Axios reported, citing a company spokesperson.
On Friday, YouTube’s vice president of public policy, Leslie Miller, told Axios that as of March 17, Donald J. Trump’s channel “is no longer restricted and the ability to upload new content is restored.”
“We carefully assessed the continued risk of real-world violence, balancing that with the importance of preserving the opportunity for voters to hear equally from the leading national candidates heading into the election,” Miller said.
“This channel will remain subject to our policies, just like any other YouTube channel.”
The Axios report added that the restrictions have prevented Trump from posting videos to his 2.6 million followers for more than two years. YouTube had initially suspended Trump’s account in January 2021 after the January 6 Capitol riots, claiming that his account had violated its policies for posting content that incited calls for violence. Later, he stated that “the risk of violence has decreased”.
YouTube is owned by Alphabet, the same company that owns the Google search engine.
Ahead of the 2024 election, more Big Tech platforms are reviewing Donald Trump’s accounts that were frozen in the wake of Jan. 6.
Meta reinstated Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts last month after a two-year suspension. Elon Musk also reinstated Trump’s Twitter account.
