Sunday Thoughts: As the 2022 midterm election campaign winds down, lies and slander are unacceptable

As the 2022 midterm election campaigns wind down, the lies and slander have flown. It has been an exhausting experience. The list is long with examples. However, below are some recent outrageous examples.

Liberal historian Michael Beschloss gave MSNBC viewers a scare, warning them that a GOP red wave in next week’s midterms could spell the end of American democracy as we know it. Speaking right after Biden’s recent speech, in which he claimed the MAGA crowd is a threat to democracy, the leading “historian” said, “… this week [midterm elections] was whether we will be a democracy in the future, if our children will be arrested and possibly killed.

In a recent segment revealing what she really thinks about white Republican women, Hostin opined, “I read a poll yesterday that white, Republican, suburban women are now going to vote Republican. It’s almost like cockroaches voting for Raid, isn’t it?

White women voting for Republicans are like cockroaches voting for a raid. If a host said that about someone who wasn’t white, they’d be fired immediately. pic.twitter.com/8H08ml04xu

Representative Jim Clyburn compares the people who support their political enemies are the Nazis. He claims that Republican ovations to Trump at SOTU, for statements they knew were lies, were reminiscent of Hitler and Nazi Germany: “I think this country … could very well go the way of Germany in the 1930s.”

President Joe Biden continues to tout the size of next year’s Social Security payout increase. Even CNN had to admit the tweet was a lie. Biden brags, ignoring the critical context. Biden does not explain that the reason the 2023 increase will be unusually large is that the inflation rate has been unusually large. Nor was that context included in a misleading post on the White House’s Twitter account, a post the White House deleted on Wednesday after it was widely criticized and Twitter put a fact check on it. See the screenshot of the tweet below.

Of course, the above were examples of Democrats in their lies and slander; it also happens on the republican side. Watch President Biden Call Out Republican Lies and Conspiracies Below, Though Again, There Are always the case of lying about the lies of others.

Being a Sunday Thoughts, it is not difficult to know that none of the above is “agreeable” in relation to the biblical texts. However, here are some references to slander, and here are some references to lying. Below are some selection references.

Psalm 101:5: “Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, I will destroy him…” Colossians 3:8: “… Put them all aside: wrath, anger, malice, slander and abusive speech from your mouth.” Exodus 20:16: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” John 8:44: “You are of your father the devil…he speaks by his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Does this mean that lies and slander should not be faced? There is a proper way to do it. See below and learn more here for an example of how you can effectively handle lies and slander during an election.

Fortunately, the 2022 midterm election cycle is coming to an end, and not too soon. I think all our brains need a break. Let us know your thoughts on the lies and smears we’ve seen in the 2022 midterm election cycle, perhaps by giving us one of your examples in the comments section below.
