The three Israeli hostages the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) mistakenly shot and killed in the Gaza Strip were flying a white flag, a senior IDF official said Saturday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Another soldier shot and killed the third hostage despite shouting in Hebrew and an order from a commander to stop shooting, the WSJ reported. The hostages may have taken off their shirts to show they were unarmed and not a threat.
“The IDF began reviewing the incident immediately,” the IDF said said Friday. “The IDF emphasizes that this is an active combat zone in which ongoing fighting has occurred over the past few days. Immediate lessons have been learned from the event, which have been passed on to all troops in the IDF in the field. The IDF expresses deep remorse for the tragic incident and sends its condolences to the families. Our national mission is to locate the missing and bring home all hostages.”
