2-year-old girl dies in tornado just as her mother gives birth to her brother: ‘Pray for us’

A Mississippi family is devastated after a tornado recently killed a little girl and seriously injured her cousin, just as her mother was giving birth to a new life.

On Friday, Dominique Green dropped off her 2-year-old daughter, Aubrey, at her parents’ mobile home in Silver City, Mississippi, a small town of a few hundred people an hour north of Jackson. When Green was on her way to the hospital to give birth to her second child, her parents, whose names have not been released, agreed to see little Aubrey, even though they were also watching their two sons, ages 10 and 11, and three other grandchildren: Kaleb, 8, Kelsey, 7, and Kensley, 1.

Just hours after Aubrey joined her seven family members in the mobile home, an EF-4 tornado ripped through the community, destroying nearly everything in its path and leaving dozens of victims in its wake. According to JoAnn Winston, Aubrey’s great-aunt who lived in the same mobile home park, the tornado struck without warning.

“I heard something like a train … My oldest son was saying, ‘Get on the floor! Get on the floor,'” Winston recalled.

When it was over, Winston came out to find his sister’s house gone and little Aubrey in serious condition among the wreckage. Although EMTs attempted life-saving measures, Aubrey had already died from her injuries, just hours before her mother gave birth to her brother at the hospital.

Unfortunately, the family’s tragedy did not end there. Young Kaleb, Aubrey’s cousin, was also seriously injured in the storm. His mother, Jessica Drain, described the horrifying moment she learned her son had been injured.

“They told me my son was bleeding from the head, he was laying there, he had a seizure, his eyes rolled to the back of his head,” Drain said, adding that he felt “pain, pain and frustration at not being able to reach my son or my niece [Aubrey] in time”.

Kaleb remains on a ventilator in intensive care. He is expected to undergo several more surgeries in the future.

Also, Kaleb and Aubrey’s great uncle, JoAnn Winston’s brother, died of a heart attack on Sunday. Authorities do not believe their deaths are related to the storm, which has reportedly killed at least 26 people in Mississippi alone.

“All I can say is people just pray for us,” Winston said, “and just pray that we get through this.”
