An attack by a 1,300-pound bull on Interstate 495 in Raynham ended in a police shootout and the animal was put out of its misery by the owner of the farm where the bull had escaped Monday in morning, according to the authorities.
The chaos began around 9 a.m. when the bull broke free from Mathieu Farms, where workers were trying to load it into a truck for slaughter.

The animal escaped after breaking through several fences, including electrified fences, and jumping over a six-foot berm, the Raynham Police Department reported.
The wild ride took her onto Jennings Drive near Elm Street East and later onto I-495, where it caused a three-vehicle crash. One driver was hospitalized after the collision.
After fleeing the highway, the bull took refuge in Lake Nippenicket, near a Raynham Water District facility.
Despite the efforts of officials and farm staff to restrain the bull, it charged aggressively at those on the ground. In response, a Raynham police officer used his department-issued rifle, but the initial shots failed to stop the animal.
The officer then fired additional shots, striking the bull in the leg and preventing further damage.
The owner of the farm, a legal gun owner, intervened with his hunting rifle to kill the bull, as the officer's gun proved insufficient, according to police.
Raynham Police Chief David LaPlante praised officers for their handling of the unusual situation. “Going up against a 1,300-pound bull is not something you go into your shift thinking is going to happen,” LaPlante said. “Our officers handled the situation effectively and prevented further injury and destruction.”
