A Lafayette Police Department officer has been confirmed dead in connection with a hostage situation in Jeanerette by the department.

A statement released by the Lafayette Police Department detailed the events that led to the officer's death.
“Early this afternoon, the Lafayette Police Department SWAT team was assisting the Jeanerette City Marshals Office with a hostage situation in Jeanerette, LA. The incident began in early the day after the Jeanerette City Marshals Office attempted to serve an arrest warrant.
The suspect had multiple warrants for his arrest and they requested the assistance of our SWAT team. The Lafayette Police Department has a mutual aid agreement with surrounding agencies to assist in the event of a critical incident or emergency. During the operation, the suspect fired several shots at law enforcement.
Four Lafayette police officers were injured. Two officers were shot and bullet fragments hit the other two officers. All officers involved were taken to an area hospital. Three officers are currently listed in good condition with non-life threatening injuries. As a result of the shooting, the fourth officer died in the line of duty.

During the operation, the suspect, 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst, opened fire on law enforcement officers. Four Lafayette officers were injured in the exchange. Two officers were shot and two others were hit by bullet fragments.
Hurst is now in custody.

All injured officers were taken to a local hospital. There are currently three agents reported be in good condition with non-life threatening injuries. Tragically, the fourth officer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
