Five people are dead after a car crash in the city of Yonkers, New York.

According to reports, the crash occurred late Tuesday after police witnessed a car driving erratically. Authorities attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver sped off.

Police said the vehicle accelerated to “beyond reckless speeds” before slamming into another car at an intersection. All four 18-year-old men in the second vehicle were killed on impact.

The suspect later died of his injuries at a local hospital.

“I think it’s very reckless, it’s very dangerous, it’s very irresponsible,” Michael Reyes, a victim’s cousin, stated. “And not only did he pay with his own life, but now not only is my family being impacted, but the other families of those kids that were in the car with my cousin.”

Police said the driver had a history of reckless driving. Officers also disengaged from their pursuit to avoid this kind of outcome.
